What do we believe?
-
We believe everything that the Bible teaches. But especially we emphasise the Bible’s central message – the good news about Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that we are all “sinners”. We have disobeyed God’s commands and we are cut off from God. But Jesus Christ came to bring us back to God. He is able to forgive all for all the wrong we’ve done, change us inside and give us eternal life. Come along if you want to know more! - The 1689 Baptist Confession of faith is a summary of what the Bible teaches and we believe.
What’s in a Name?
Particular – this refers to the death of Jesus Christ. He died for particular people. Jesus said in John’s Gospel: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep… I am the good shepherd. I known my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.”
We believe that all people need to be saved from their sin – this is our real problem! We believe God sent His Son into this world to live a perfect life that was offered up as a sacrifice for the punishment of the sins of His people. The Good News of Christianity is that there is a Shepherd who can save us from our sin – its punishment, power and pollution!- Baptist – this refers to the act of being immersed in water in the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In baptism an individual obeys Jesus and identifies with Him in His crucifixion. We die to our old life of sin and we rise to a new life of obedience trusting in Him and seeking His protection and provision for all we need. This is a very personal and profound step which stands at the doorway of the Christian life.
- Chapel – this is the building where historically we have met together to worship God. We believe our worship pleases God in Heaven and prepares us for the time when we shall be there ourselves. When we meet We Listen to God’s Word – the Bible. We speak to God in prayer. We sing hymns to God. We speak to each other about our joys and sorrows.
- Charlesworth 1835 – this reminds us that many before us have lived out their faith in this locality. Charlesworth has been a site of Christian worship for many centuries. The Baptist Chapel was built by people with Trinitarian, Reformation and Puritan teachings in their blood. They believed that these truths were taught in the Bible along with baptism for believers. We share their convictions and long to see these truths more widely understood and believed because they offer the only true hope for this very troubled world.
